Dr. Youngquist has studied and observed petroleum and alternative energy sources in 70 countries. He received his Ph.D. in geology from the University of Iowa. Emeritus Chair, Geology Department, University of Oregon, Portland.

He has worked for Exxon Corporation and as a consultant to Sun Oil, Shell Oil, and Amoco.

He is an emeritus member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Under the MFS oil section is, Encircling the Peak of World Oil Production, Richard C. Duncan and Walter Youngquist, and under natural gas, North American Natural Gas: Data Show Supply Problems, Walter Youngquist and Richard C. Duncan.
