HR-1310, 1995: Information and Testimony

HR-1310 was sponsored by Rep. James Oberstar (DFL) with purpose of changing several of the functions and management of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Voyageurs National Park. The essence of these proceedings was to define the human and non-human roles in a system, i.e., wilderness and use of natural areas, and responsibilities and obligations regarding local versus national management of national natural areas and parks.

A significant volume of testimony was delivered during the proceedings and a substantial portion of that testimony is included here.

A substantial quantity of news articles were also published during this period, but it remains for the visitor to search the Minneapolis Star Tribune, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Duluth News, and various other Minnesota and national newspapers for their perspectives.

The extensive coverage on the MFS website provides both an archival purpose and historical perspective.

As vividly demonstrated by Minnesota, the contentious positions and arguments presented involving our nation's park and natural systems will, unfortunately, be revisited not only in these treasured areas of Minnesota but in other states and natural areas as well.
